Australia Trip Itinerary

Some months later in January 2008, our Australia itinerary came together and we confirmed the booking. We were off!

Flying with Qantas, we'd skip the stopovers to save time for Australia itself. Yes it was going to be painful, but we knew less about those countries and we had so much we wanted to squeeze in.

Map of Australia itinerary

We'd fly into Sydney via Bangkok, then straight out again to Connellan Airport, Ayers Rock. There we would pick up a hire car and drive to Alice Springs where we could fly down to Adelaide.

From an Adelaide base, we could visit Kangaroo Island and the Barossa Valley, before heading off, via Robe, the Grampians and Port Fairy, down the Great Ocean Road to Melbourne.

From Melbourne, we'd visit Phillip Island for the Little Penguins and then catch the three hour flight up to Cairns, where we'd drive on to Port Douglas - our base to explore North Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef.

We'd then return to Cairns and fly down to Hamilton Island for some relaxation and then on again to Brisbane. From there, we would drive to Noosa via Steve Irwin's zoo and some wonderful coastal roads.

From Noosa, it was through Tin Can Bay for the dolphin feeding I'd missed out on by dropping Monkey Mia and Tangalooma and on to Hervey Bay. There we do a humpback whale watch tour and cross over to explore Fraser Island.

Returning to Harvey Bay, we'd fly back to Kingsford Smith airport in Sydney to finish the trip in style, with visits to the Blue Mountains, Bondi and my uncle's barbeque!

And all that in a month? Would Hannah's sister be OK feeding the cats?!
